GRUM Summer Mix

Grum’s latest mixtape for summer is available to play and download for free exclusively at our friends NYCelectro. This young Scottish producer is the new ill DJ on the electro scene. His music speaks for itself—it’s just damn good. Check out his debut album (released back in May) and other releases on his website. Another interesting aspect that you can read about here is that his album/poster artwork (see below) is actually a barcode: you can take a photo of it on the street or in a magazine, using a couple specific iPhone apps, and it will direct you to his album on the iTunes store. In the meantime, just listen to this summer mix and dance, dance, dance.

Collage of the Eclectic Collective

W!ll Sheridan’s monthly party Eclectic Collective was jam packed Tuesday night for a showcase of some of the freshest NEXT-wave music acts on the scene. From studio-pop stud Peter Kirk, to brand new hip-hop/pop artist from Chi-town Gavin, to dance explosion sexy trio Radio Musik, the crowd responded with uproarious zeal. Then after a set from DJ Bonnie Danger, W!LL slam-dunked the funk with his most epic set yet, complete with army themed stage, banana-throwing antics, strobe light interlude, plenty of call and response and a capella rhyming. Even his collabo with Nasty Ness (of Planet Rump) “Set Fire To The Streets” was surging with more power than ever. Download the Great Tiger remix here. Speaking of Great Tiger, they rounded out the night with a funky electro odyssey, full of energy, charisma and laser pointers dancing across them from the audience. Re-live the experience by watching the collage below, and don’t miss the next one!

Wallpaper. brought the funky fresh West Coast vibe to Brooklyn Bowl Sunday night

Wallpaper., an Oakland, California duo, put on a funky/freaky/smooth/krump/fun show for Nicky Digital’s “The Deep End” party series, the Official Pool Parties After Parties, at Brooklyn Bowl Sunday night. If you don’t know these guys by now, check out their video for “T-Rex”—this shit blew us out of our chairs a few months ago and we can’t get enough. One mention of the song and it’s in our heads for weeks. “I go BIG on the weeeekeeend, I go T-REX.” Pure genius. Their set did not disappoint: they performed their entire album “Doo Doo Face” [cop it here] and it was a freaky dance get down. Ricky laid the smooth moves on us while Arjun kept the beat in his pocket. Check out this live footage to get a taste, and don’t miss them next time they’re in town! They’re on tour now so catch em if you can! Tonight’s stop: DC.

The Radiant Child: A brilliant film of a brilliant man

The new Jean-Michel Basquiat documentary is a must-see. It tells the story of his art career—from being a truly inspired teen to becoming a hugely famous artist in less than 10 years and then leaving this world at the age of 27. He left over one thousand paintings and one thousand drawings for us to explore, decode and feel for years to come. An incredible body of work that analyzed, synthesized, prophetized and expressed our human culture and history, frame after frame. He was a truly pure being, operating from his soul and letting his knowledge flow back out through him in automatically.

The film is playing now at Film Forum on Houston between 6th & 7th Aves. You should probably also pre-order the DVD now. It’s a classic.

Planet Rump rockin Santos at BOOTY CRISIS

In case you missed it, get a taste of how our set went down at the epic BOOTY CRISIS party at Santos Party House. We pulled out all the stops to deliver funky freshness to your eyes and ears. Back-It-Up Dancers Hayley Sunshine and Kayli Szczepankiewicz held it down with crazy hype choreography in the background. Brendan McCarthy brought the inside of a computer from the 1980s (read “Tron”) to the stage with his incredible sparkle spandex set installation piece. And of course, yours truly, Planet Rump brought the bumpin beats, rhymes and hooks to your eardrums! Big thanks to Marilyn Lobos for capturing this on video!
